Do not let this concept trip you up! You have already shown me that you can calculate PE and KE and that you also know what work and power are. The Law of Conservation of Energy is that we cannot create or destroy energy. It is already here, in one form or another, and it always will be! For your story problems remember these things; PE+KE = TME (Total Mechanical Energy) or Ebefore = Eafter The only way that TME can change, is if work is done to it. If energy is being taken away from TME, then negative work was performed (-W). If energy was added to TME, then positive work was performed (+W). With that rule in mind, remember the formula:
